Sitting in the middle of the Mediterranean the island of Malta hosted a series of events associated with the classical guitar. Gordon Mizzi is a Maltese guitarist composer who has written a number of inspiring works for the instrument. Many of his works were included in a performance by Carlos Bonell in the island's Manoel Theatre on October 22 2002 that was much acclaimed by critics. The first part of the performance included works by Tarrega and a homage to Federico Garcia Lorca. In the second half of the concert, Bonell gave world premieres of much of Mizzi's music.

Maltese art music has always been influenced by the island's proximity of Italy and the historical association with the Knights of Malta. The Knights, who fought in the Crusades, imported many musicians from European courts.

Diverse sources influence the work of Mizzi's own musical canvas, from the Maltese-inspired Madliena Sonata to European influences in Song of the Sea and Sonata for Six Swans as well as the Hispanic in Tango-Cancion Vieja and Habanera. In his Variations on a Maltese Theme, based on a folk tune known as għanja, its Arabic pedigree is heard, though moderated by Italian harmonies. Chris Kilvington reviewed this piece in Classical Guitar in July 1999, commenting on its 'charming melodic grace'. Much of Mizzi's music shows a remarkable gift for romantic melody with bel canto influences.
