GORDON MIZZI'S BIOGRAPHY

Gordon Mizzi was born on the island of Malta in 1947. He was educated in Malta, the United Kingdom, Italy and the U.S.A. and is a graduate of the University of Leicester in England and the University of Southern California in the United States. He has composed a number of original works and transcriptions for the guitar and has also written articles for some of the leading guitar magazines.
A number of diverse sources influence Gordon Mizzi's musical canvas from the Maltese inspired Variations on a Maltese Theme and Two Anthem Studies, to the Hispanic Tango and Habanera, to the European Madliena Sonata, Song of the Sea, Mazurka and Sonata for Six Mute Swans, which were recorded by Carlos Bonell, the celebrated guitarist, on the CD 'Song of the Sea-Carlos Bonell Plays Gordon Mizzi' . This was enthusiastically received by critics and broadcasted by a number of radio stations all over the world, including, the Cowan Collection on BBC Radio 3.

Saints and Fireworks is the second CD of a collection of his music recorded by Carlos Bonell. Some of the works in this collection have connections with Maltese themes but this music does not respect a geographical location being influenced by so many different musical traditions from so many countries that have woven a thread through the lives of its people through the centuries from the Branles de Malte commissioned by the Order of the Knights of St. John in 1551 to the present day. These intuitive pieces open the door inviting you into the world of the guitar. The critic, Robert Matthew Walker, writing in Musical Opinion, Britain's oldest classical music magazine in May –June 2007, wrote in a review of a concert in London: Gordon Mizzi's music is 'fascinating and inventive.'

Steve Marsh, writing in Classical Guitar Magazine, March 2011 said ‘when a composer of the stature of Carlos Bonell is willing to campaign for a particular composer one must take notice and this composer is certainly one to watch for.’

His music is published by Mel Bay and is performed by leading guitarists all over the world.
